HMP ELMLEY – EXPANSION STUDY

MDG were appointed by Faithful+Gould to initially deliver a feasibility options appraisal on the expansion of the site and provision of an additional 240 places via a new 4 storey houseblock. Following a successful outcome MDG were then invited to develop the proposals into a stage 2 concept design which also included the additional requirements to house the increased number of prisoners on site.

As well as the new houseblock a number of ancillary areas were also identified by the design team, led by the Establishment, as requiring upgrading to accommodate the additional population.

HMP Elmley is a purpose built prison opened in 1992, and is one of six Bullingdon design prisons in England. A new Category C Unit was opened at the prison in 1997, making Elmley the largest of the three prisons within the Sheppey Cluster.
