MDG Architects is thrilled to finally reveal one of our most exciting and closely-held projects — the completion of a cutting-edge Sensory Consumer Research Centre at the historic Mondelez site in Bournville!
This innovative facility will act as the catalyst for all future Cadbury and Mondelez product development, playing a central role in how the world experiences new chocolate and snack products in years to come.
Designed and delivered in close collaboration with Mondelez since inception in late 2022, the facility blends state-of-the-art research environments with the rich heritage of one of Britain’s most iconic brands. The new 806m2 facility is also home to dedicated spaces for consumer research where focus groups, in-depth studies and collaborative product creation will take place.
The new facility provides:
- Two fully independent consumer testing suites, complete with dedicated sensory booths and training rooms
- A central professional-grade kitchen connecting the testing spaces
- A flexible Co-Creation zone for experimental product development
- A private Focus Room to assess consumer feedback
- Advanced climate, humidity and lighting controls, capable of replicating a range of global conditions — even allowing researchers to test how colours affect taste perception.
- Bespoke office space for staff working within the facility.
Located in the heart of Bournville — a model village founded in the late 1800s by the Cadbury
family — this facility marks a new chapter in the legacy of chocolate making in Birmingham.
The historic Cadbury factory remains one of the UK’s most treasured manufacturing sites, employing nearly 1,000 people today. With Mondelez continuing to invest in the site, this latest addition strengthens Bournville’s position as a world leader in confectionery innovation.
We’re incredibly proud to have played a part in shaping the future of a brand with such a rich past and look forward to future projects at the site.
